Pandora Still a Questionable Investment

The latest of the major tech company initial public offerings has come and gone, with Pandora opening on the New York Stock Exchange, but questions still linger despite its apparent success. CNET reports that Pandora is overvalued and the company’s fundamental business model should discourage investors.

The most basic issue for Pandora revolves around its primary cost: music licensing. The service pays 0.1 cent to SoundExchange, the group that collects money from online music distributors for artists, for every song played. While this seems like a minimal amount, it adds up to $7.35 per customer per year if each person listens to their maximum allowed free music. Read more…

Top Up your Retirement Savings

Now is a good time to be thinking about whether you are putting enough aside for your retirement. A review of your long term plans should be done on an annual basis and June is good month for two reasons; firstly because it is too wet and cold outside to be doing anything more interesting and secondly because you should make sure you have put enough into your KiwiSaver fund to get the maximum Government tax credit.

If you are self employed, working part time, or a low income earner, you might find your contributions for the year are less than $1,040.

Team Building for Small Business Owners

A small business owner or entrepreneur is only as good as the team he or she leads. If the team does not fire at full efficiency, the entrepreneur’s business suffers. Often the case with inexperienced leaders, they fail to initiate and promote team building for the purpose of motivating and helping staff reach goals.

Team building is the process of executing exercises, games, or other activities that promote the cohesiveness of the company culture and work ethic. It helps people socialize with one another, as well as helps encourage creativity and enthusiasm to help the company succeed as a team.

Obama pitches plan to promote high-tech innovation

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says technological innovations can help create jobs and spur growth in clean energy and advanced manufacturing.

In his radio and Internet address, the president promoted a plan he outlined Friday in which the government would join with universities and corporations to re-ignite the manufacturing sector with an emphasis on cutting-edge research and new technologies.

“Their mission is to come up with a way to get ideas from the drawing board to the manufacturing floor to the marketplace as swiftly as possible, which will help create quality jobs, and make our businesses more competitive,” Obama said in the address aired Saturday.

It was taped Friday during his visit to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, where he saw a display of mini-robots that explore water and sewer pipes.

He marveled at robots that can defuse a bomb, mow a lawn, even scrape old paint.

With growing interest from the military, businesses and consumers, the Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute has more than 500 technical experts and a $65 million annual budget.

The $500 million initiative is the latest effort by Obama to promote job creation in the midst of an economic slowdown that has reduced hiring and weakened his job approval standing with the public.

Obama has tried to brave the weak economy by featuring job creation measures during weekly trips outside Washington and in his radio addresses. O

Mobile Devices Pass By Computers

The nature of computers changed dramatically as room-sized machines were condensed to little more than a TV, but now the industry has shifted again as devices shrink to fit easily in a pocket. A report from market analyst Flurry suggests that the transition from traditional computing to mobile computing has reached a point, with more time spent on mobile devices than browsing the internet.

As recently as last December, Flurry’s regular survey found that people browsed the internet on computers 70 minutes per day, compared to only 66 minutes on mobile apps. Read more…

Oil drops as international reserves are tapped

NEW YORK (AP) — Oil plunged nearly 5 percent Thursday after the International Energy Agency said it will release 60 million barrels of oil from its reserves to make up for a loss of Libyan exports in global oil markets.

The IEA, which includes the U.S., will release 2 million barrels per day over the next 30 days. Half of that will come from U.S. S
