Md. insurer hesitates to give $1M life policy to wife of murder victim

A Maryland life insurance company is hesitating in handing over $1 million from a life insurance policy that was bought weeks before a Philadelphia man was murdered in his driveway.

Veno Leigertwood Jr., a guidance counselor, was shot and killed Sept. 13, 2008, in his driveway in Yeadon, Pa.

A $1 million life insurance policy was issued on Leigertwood’s life 18 days prior to his murder. His wife and primary beneficiary, Raven Leigertwood, is a person of interest in the investigation of his death, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Global Marine Insurance : Hurricane Irene Hits The East Coast

Hurricane Irene ended up traveling along quite a different path than what was originally expected this past week, surprising many residents of the East Coast. Health Insurance Companies May Be Required to Provide Clearer Policy Information

Proposed regulations announced last week by the Department of Health and Human Services would require health insurance companies to make available clear, concise and consistent information about individuals policies. The information would have to be offered in easy-to-understand language so those interested in buying policies would understand exactly what theyre paying.

The dos and don’ts of COBRA health insurance

Although the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) was passed in 2009 to expand medical coverage options for American families, it is not the first time the government has stepped in to guarantee access to health care. In 1986, the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) was passed to provide continued medical coverage for those losing their employer-sponsored health plan.

COBRA health insurance allows individuals to maintain their group health plan should they leave their job for reasons other than misconduct or should their work hours be reduced resulting in the loss of medical benefits.

IRS Clarifies Rules for Over-the-Counter Medications

According to the Affordable Care Act, the cost of over-the-counter medicines or drugs can be reimbursed from a Cafeteria Plan / Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) if you have a prescription.

The Internal Revenue Service has issued new guidance allowing the continued use of FSA and HRA debit cards for the purchase of prescribed over-the-counter medicines and drugs. The new guidance modifies previous guidance to permit taxpayers to continue using FSA and HRA debit cards to purchase over-the-counter medications for which the taxpayer has a prescription.
