DEPENDENTS UP TO AGE 26 ALLOWED ON FAMILY MEDICAL PLANS IN SEPTEMBER 2010

As of May 1, 2010, Kaiser Permanente now allows dependents to remain on their parents’ family plan up until age 26. Adult dependents ages 19 to 25 no longer have to be full time students with an accredited college. If your adult child was going to age off the plan or lose coverage due to lack of enrollment in college, your child will now be able to continue as a dependent on your family health insurance plan until his/her 26th birthday.

New applications for family health insurance still go by the original guidelines. Adult children enrolling on their family plan must still meet the following criteria:
 Must be enrolled in an accredited institution.
 Must be a full-time student.
 Must be dependent upon subscriber for support.
 Must be unmarried.
 Must be under 23 years of age.

In September 2010 family plans will be able to include adult children up to the age of 25. At that point, if parents have adult children who are not currently on the family plan, they will be able to be added. However, they will have to apply to be added to the family plan and their application will go through medical underwriting. This means that there is the possibility that they may be denied due to pre-existing health conditions; however, if they are approved they may be added to their parents’ family medical plan.

Children’s health insurance applications are still subject to medical underwriting. Kids with pre-existing conditions can still be denied medical insurance coverage. However, according to the health care reform bill, this should change in September 2010, when all United States health insurance providers will be required to approve child health insurance applications without medical underwriting.
