Can a Trip be Canceled Because of War?

Most travel insurance plans offer coverage for trip cancellation and trip interruption.  These benefits will reimburse the traveler pre-paid and non-refundable expenses if, for a covered reason,  the trip is canceled before it starts or interrupted after departure.  War and acts of war are normally not listed as a covered reason, in fact, are often specifically listed in the general exclusions for all coverage.  There are some plans that will cover acts of terrorism, but not war.

If a traveler is concerned that the trip will not happen because of war, then it is best to find a plan that offers cancel for any reason coverage.  This allows the traveler to cancel the trip without providing a reason, but must do so at least 48 hours prior to departure.  Also, to qualify for this benefit, the insurance must be purchased within a set amount of time from the initial trip deposit date, normally 14-30 days, depending on the plan.  Cancel for any reason will only reimburse a portion of the trip cost, not the full 100% like trip cancellation.  Lastly, this coverage is normally a selectable upgrade that will raise the cost of the premium by about 40%.  Always refer to the certificate of insurance for details.

Insurance-Rate-Hike Foes Can Recoup Legal Fees

Consumer groups that successfully challenge insurance rate increases can recoup their legal fees from the insurers, even when the companies drop their requests or agree to a compromise, a state appeals court has ruled.

But the author of the ballot measure said the ruling was an important victory for consumer advocates and would encourage them to hire experts who could take on insurance company witnesses.

“The insurance industry was attempting to escape accountability when they ask for permission to raise rates,” Harvey Rosenfield, founder of an organization called Consumer Watchdog, said Monday. Read more…

Can Frequent Flyer Miles Be Insured?

Travel insurance plans protect the traveler’s pre-paid and non-refundable trip costs in the event of trip cancellation or trip interruption.  However, frequent flyer miles and reward points are somewhat different.  Normally, airlines and reward programs charge a fee to re-deposit the miles or change the dates of travel.  Therefore, when calculating the trip cost, do not include the cash value of a frequent flyer ticket, rather, include the amount of fees that would be incurred if the trip were canceled.  Always refer to the certificate of insurance for details.
