Massachusetts Tackles Medical Costs

Massachusetts became the first state to move toward universal health insurance five years ago. Now, the state is debating how to replace the fee-for-service medical system. Mass Governor Deval L. Patrick (D) is trying to push the health care system here into a new era of cost control. He is proposing a new way of paying for care that would give lump payments to teams of doctors responsible for almost all the care of a group of patients, with bonuses for saving money and dispensing high-caliber services that keep people healthy.

We did access first, said state Senate President Therese Murray (D).

California eyes Amazon Tax to reap sales tax bounty

A judicial loophole allows online-only retailers (such as Amazon.com) to avoid the rules of sales tax collection, resulting in a loss of $1.1 billion in taxes on internet and mail order sales last year in California according to the State Board of Equalization. The board estimates that enforcing sales tax collection on internet companies would result in an additional $786 million to the state general fund and $359 million to local governments. Over 20 years ago, at the dawn of the Internet, the government decided to exempt online retailers from collecting sales taxes in an effort to increase Internet sales.

CNET reports that Pandora is overvalued and the company’s fundamental business model should discourage investors.

The most basic issue for Pandora revolves around its primary cost: music licensing. The service pays 0.1 cent to SoundExchange, the group that collects money from online music distributors for artists, for every song played. If you are self employed, working part time, or a low income earner, you might find your contributions for the year are less than $1,040.

While the health insurance company was initially informed that its paperwork contained errors, California residents weren’t spared the pain when Anthem submitted a corrected double-digit rate filing.

Then, Blue Shield of California announced three health insurance rate hikes from October to March, which added up to a 59 percent increase in premiums for some policyholders.

Now, less than a year after its 2010 filing debacle, Anthem Blue Cross is making headlines again with yet another individual health plan premium increase. I
