A small business owner or entrepreneur is only as good as the team he or she leads. If the team does not fire at full efficiency, the entrepreneur’s business suffers. Often the case with inexperienced leaders, they fail to initiate and promote team building for the purpose of motivating and helping staff reach goals.

Team building is the process of executing exercises, games, or other activities that promote the cohesiveness of the company culture and work ethic. It helps people socialize with one another, as well as helps encourage creativity and enthusiasm to help the company succeed as a team.

Obama pitches plan to promote high-tech innovation

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama says technological innovations can help create jobs and spur growth in clean energy and advanced manufacturing.

In his radio and Internet address, the president promoted a plan he outlined Friday in which the government would join with universities and corporations to re-ignite the manufacturing sector with an emphasis on cutting-edge research and new technologies.

“Their mission is to come up with a way to get ideas from the drawing board to the manufacturing floor to the marketplace as swiftly as possible, which will help create quality jobs, and make our businesses more competitive,” Obama said in the address aired Saturday.

It was taped Friday during his visit to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, where he saw a display of mini-robots that explore water and sewer pipes.

He marveled at robots that can defuse a bomb, mow a lawn, even scrape old paint.

With growing interest from the military, businesses and consumers, the Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute has more than 500 technical experts and a $65 million annual budget.

The $500 million initiative is the latest effort by Obama to promote job creation in the midst of an economic slowdown that has reduced hiring and weakened his job approval standing with the public.

Aon Hewitt Setting up Large Group Health Insurance Exchange

Aon Hewitt Inc. is developing a health insurance exchange that would enable employers with least 1,000 employees to offer their workers an array of plans provided by participating insurers. By using the exchange, employers would be relieved of the time and expense of choosing health insurers and administering their plans, while employees would have a broader choice of health plans, explained Ken Sperling, global health and benefits practice leader in Aon Hewitts Norwalk, Conn., office. Employers wouldnt have to worry about bids or plan administration, Mr. Sperling notes.

Mobile Devices Pass By Computers

The nature of computers changed dramatically as room-sized machines were condensed to little more than a TV, but now the industry has shifted again as devices shrink to fit easily in a pocket. A report from market analyst Flurry suggests that the transition from traditional computing to mobile computing has reached a point, with more time spent on mobile devices than browsing the internet.

As recently as last December, Flurry’s regular survey found that people browsed the internet on computers 70 minutes per day, compared to only 66 minutes on mobile apps. Read more…

P&C Q1 Net Income Drops; Net Underwriting Loss Grows

Net losses on underwriting growth to $4.5 billion in first-quarter 2011 from $1.8 billion in first-quarter 2010 contributed to the declines in private U.S. P&C insurers’ net income after taxes and overall rate of return, according to a joint announcement by ISO  , the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.) and the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America (PCI).
