6.8M California Residents Uninsured – Recession Blamed

The number of Californians who lack health insurance, particularly employer-based coverage, has continued to climb during the ongoing recession, according to the California HealthCare Foundation’s(CHCF) annual California Health Care Almanac. CHCF publishes CaliforniaHealthline.

Coverage Statistics

  • About 6.8 million Californians are uninsured, or more than 20% of the state’s residents;
  • Over the past 20 years, the percentage of residents younger than age 65 with employer-based coverage has decreased from 69% to 52%,
  • Increases in Medi-Cal enrollment partially have offset the drop in coverage.

Kaiser Permanente to Suspend the $25,000 POS Small Group Plans in 2011

To comply with recent guidelines from the Federal Department of Health and Human Services that requires the elimination of annual and lifetime limits from all plan tiers, Kaiser Permanene Small Business Health Insurance California Added Choice $25,000 POS plans will be suspended for new sales and renewals as stated below:

1. Beginning March 1, 2011 the Added Choice $25,000 POS plans will not be available for new sales or for renewing groups who would like to add the plan as an option at the time of renewal.
