S.C. insurance adjuster steals premiums from group of churches

A Spartanburg, S.C., insurance adjuster pleaded guilty Oct. 20 to misappropriating about $1 million in insurance premiums from a group of churches.

William Worthy, 49, plead guilty to insurance fraud and thereby was excused from 13 counts of wire fraud, according to Goupstate.com.

Between March 2004 and July 2006, Worthy acted as a third-party administrator for a self-funded insurance program for a group of churches that thought it was fully funded.

The state Labor Department said that premiums had been paid by the churches, but not applied to the claims.

About $3.5 million in premiums were handled by Worthy, the adjustor, who was responsible for the financial transactions of his business, Goupstate.com reported.
